Facilitate a safe space at the workplace in order to realize human potential

Why is Psychological Safety important?

Fear of speaking up is preventing the best ideas from being heard
Cultures of psychological unsafety are nesting beds for offensive behavior and unethical business practices

Often, what stands in the way of positive change is not an active opposition but rather an unspoken understanding that speaking up harbors risks.

This leads many employees to keep their potentially crucial opinions to themselves resulting in stagnation and continuation of harmful practices. Moreover, companies that exhibit the opposite of a psychologically safe environment, have been linked with widespread fraudulent practices, negligence of ethical standards.

When issues aren’t addressed in the open, the worst elements of our culture go unchanged. This is especially worrying with the number of people experiencing stress at work is staggering high and only increasing.

Psychological safety contributes significantly to information sharing, creativity and engagement. A culture of psychological safety also makes it more likely that we will notice when things are going in the wrong direction.

Creating a psychologically safe culture is therefore critical to the realization of the full human potential and can counteract the spread of harmful subcultures, meaningless work, and offensive behavior within organizations.

What is Psychological Safety?

Helping each other build a culture of honest communication
Psychological Safety is a term that describes a culture in which speaking up is encouraged and where people can make mistakes without fear of punishment

So, what are the building blocks of a psychologically safe work environment?

  1. Listening empathically
  1. Asking genuine questions
  1. Sharing mistakes and voicing concerns
  1. Showing vulnerability

What will I learn?

Learn to practice the skills that help bring about a work environment where the best ideas prevail
You will learn to nurture psychological safety in your work relationships and become adept at identifying the signs of psychologically unsafe environments in your organization.

1: Background knowledge

With a psychologist with expert knowledge in the field, we examine the prerequisites for a work environment where speaking up is encouraged. What does it mean to experience psychological safety? What are the benefits of such an environment? What are the indicators of a psychologically unsafe workplace? How can we best assess the level of psychological safety in the organization? What role does meaningfulness and the meaningful organization play in cultivating psychological safety and in building a culture of Inclusivity?

2: Exercises and cases:

The participants are provided with the opportunity to discuss cases from their own workplace and to work with new dilemmas with the facilitator.

The participants will practice empathic listening techniques and learn to deliver feedback in an honest and constructive manner.

3: Skills:

Conversational skills and guidance in having difficult conversations regarding psychologically unsafe work environments  (Meaningfulness Conversations).

Knowledge of the core principles of psychological safety and how to identify these and their destructive counterparts including offensive behavior, sexual harassment and more.

Fear and reluctance to speak up about problems at work often spreads far inside of organizations. Possessing the skills of spotting and counteracting the signs of a psychologically unsafe environment can be immensely useful in nurturing a culture of open, honest and productive communication.

  1. At anvende empatisk lytning
  2. At stille oprigtige spørgsmål
  3. At dele sine fejl og at give udtryk for bekymring
